>> well, know, it's true. look at this. robin home recovering from her bone marrow transplant. josh was feeling a little sick. it's good to have amy and bianna here. this morning, along with lara. and boy, do we have a lot to get to. >> we do. >> that hurricane, sandy, already deadly. 21 killed in the caribbean so far. >> and sandy is now beginning its move up the east coast, set to be a historic storm. and everyone from the carolinas all the way up to maine will feel its impact. it's expected to mix with two other huge systems, over one of the most densely pop lated areas of the country. experts are predicting at least a billion dollars in damage. >> all of the biggest cities on the east coast. let's get right to sam, leading the coverage for our extreme weather team. >> good morning, george. we want to give people a couple of days to get ready for this storm on the eastern seaboard. that's why we're talking about it so much right now. take a look at the canopy of clouds right here. about 2,000 miles across. that's unbelievable when you look at the size of the storm. but zoom into where actually the storm is, and that's what we're talking about.

that's sandy right noi. the hurricane center has it crawling up the seaboard. then speeds up from saturday on. and this is new information. makes a turn. looks like by monday it's going out to the atlantic, but hooks in, making a turn somewhere between washington, d.c., and new york city. most likely in the delmarva peninsula, in the south jersey area. that turns the storm -- for the first time, we get kind of a hybrid storm turning into the coastline. we're talking about sandy getting hit with an arctic blast of air at the same time. extra infusion of energy. and getting spun up even more. supercharged by that jet stream. exactly where is the storm right now? it's off the coast about 300 miles from miami. you can see the feeder bands of rain getting in there. that's exactly where our ginger zee is this morning. ginger, what are you feeling? >> sam, we're in between some of the heaviest bands. the winds will gust this morning. anywhere to 30 miles per hour. today, it will be 40 to 60 miles an hour. the most impressive sights? the water pushing the sand all the way up here.

up to the ropes. the grasses and the mangroves start. seaweed shouldn't be this far up on the beach. look at the pictures from yesterday. dangerous rip currents. people should not go in the water. the biggest concern would be tying things down today. likely some power outages. after it leaves florida, it starts to make the turn up the east coast. that's where we find our linsey davis there on the jersey shore. >> reporter: good morning, ginger. this coastal area is a big concern. sandy is not only expected to hit here but to hit here hard. we look at the video from where irene hit this area last year. you can see that the sand mounds and the seawalls that are intended to be the front line of defense for a storm, they were no match for the heavy rains and winds. water just poured right in. as a result, there was massive flooding, mandatory evacuations. and people in this area, once again, bracing, preparing themselves for the worst. sam? >> thank you, linsey.

thank you, ginger. if you've seen the spaghetti models, they're turning this thing towards the coastline. a lot of terms are out there. atmospheric bomb. superstorm. at the same time, joking terms like frankenstorm are used. we turn to one of my good friends, expert senior meteorologist bernie rayno from accuweather. when you hear the terms, how much of it is hype on this storm? and how much is very real? >> when you've been in this field as long as you and i have been, sam, you look for a way out when you see a storm that's projected to be this strong. but unfortunately, i don't believe there is a way out. this is not being overhyped. i would use the terms devastating and historic. a 1 in 30-year storm. or even, in the way -- the fact of the way in which this storm will be tracking east toward the coastline in new jersey, it could be a once-in-a-lifetime storm. >> we talk about the storm itself. we're talking about winds here. we're talking about coastal storm surge.

and inland heavy rains and flooding, as well. not just kois coastal flooding. i'm showing the rain map right now and how much rain will move up the shoreline with it. easily four to six. in some cases, people are saying up to ten inches of rain in major metropolitan areas. what's the biggest problem with this storm? is it the wind? is it the rain? is it the kickback snow? what will people be complaining about the most? >> unfortunately, sam, that's going to be the difference between a hurricane and a nor'easter. we're going to combine the two and have the worst characteristics of each. in a hurricane, we tend to have focused rain and wind along the northern side of the storm. but with this storm, we're going to have the wind and the rain be a problem across a large part of the storm system. and depending on where this storm goes, north of the storm, we're looking at a devastating storm surge. we're going to be looking at inland flooding, as well. >> bernie, thank you so much. i know you'll be watching this throughout the weekend. we count on good folks like you to help keep us on track. remember that this storm won't just be a coastal storm, as

bernie pointed out. we'll be following the storm for a long time. inland locations need to pay attention, as well. amy? >> thank you, sam. we know you'll be keeping us updated. now, to the tragedy in that exclusive new york city neighborhood, horribly shocking to hear for any parent or caretaker. a mother coming home to find two of her children stabbed, allegedly by their trusted nanny. we want to warn you at home, this is an extremely disturbing story. abc's john muller is on the scene on the upper west side of manhattan. john? >> reporter: amy, it is almost inconceivable. a parent's worst nightmare. a mom returns home from a swim practice with one child, to her beautiful manhattan apartment, to find her other two children stabbed to death. the nanny she trusted with their lives will soon be charged with taking them. investigators are trying to figure out this morning what could have made a new york family's caretaker turn on the children she was paid to protect. >> move it out! keep going!

>> reporter: around 5:30 p.m. thursday night, marina krim arrived home from a swimming lesson with her 3-year-old to find a gruesome scene. her other two children, 2-year-old leo and 6-year-old lucia krim, stabbed to death. their nanny, lying next to them, in an apparent suicide attempt. >> on the floor of the bathroom is a nanny who apparently had inflicted wounds on her throat. >> reporter: herbert klein lives next door and heard the mother screaming. >> she's crying out. what am i going to do with the rest of my life? my life is ruined. i have no children, i have no children. >> reporter: police escorted krim from the scene after dark with her only surviving child, a sheet draped over their heads. the children's father, an executive at cnbc, was flying back from a business trip in san francisco and was notified when he arrived in new york. the 50-year-old nanny survived the wounds to her throat.

and this morning, police say she's in critical but stable condition at a nearby hospital. yoselyn ortega had reportedly worked for the family for about a year. before that, marina krim, a pediatrician, had been a stay-at-home mom. ortega has no criminal record. "the new york post" is reporting that in the screening process, the family spent nine days in the dominican republic with her family before she was hired. again, the nanny renans the hospital in stable but critical condition. she has not been formally charged because of her medical condition. she is in police custody. as this investigation continues, a family continues to grieve, as well as an entire neighborhood. amy, back to you. >> all right, john muller, thank you. there really aren't words. it's an unimaginable tragedy. >> and the parents did everything right in terms of checking out this nanny as well. so horrible. we're going to switch gears now. the race for the white house. have good instincts. they look at the other guy and say, well, that's a bull -- i can tell. a romney spokesman telling abc news, the president is rattled and on the defensive. mitt romney in defiance, ohio, endorsed by meatloaf, singing "america the beautiful" together. ♪ shining sea >> reporter: romney telling the thousands that had gathered that this time, he is the candidate of change. >> we're going to elect a president that is willing to make big changes. and i will -- i will get this country growing again with your help. >> reporter: overnight, some controversial words from a top romney surrogate. former governor john sununu of new hampshire, who injected race in the final days of the campaign. when asked about general colin powell's endorsement of president obama, citing mitt romney's foreign policy and an improving economy as the reason he's endorsing him, sununu suggested it was something else. >> when you take a look at colin powell, you have to wonder whether that's an endorsement based on issues or whether he has a slightly different reason for preferring president obama.

evacuated as a precaution. apple could send a chill through the stock market today. the company's latest profits fell short of wall street exp t expectatio expectations. apple has lost $86 billion in market share since last month alone. and a new warning about the jobs market this morning. ceos at 80 of the largest companies, including g.e., dow chemical, and bank of america have issued a joint statement urging congress to raise taxes and cut spending to reduce the deficit. they say until that happens, companies won't have the confidence to start hiring again. meantime, colgate palmolive are announces cuts. they're cutting more than 2,300 jobs, 6% of its workforce. stunning images from hawaii. very active kilauea volcano. surging lava is reaching record levels and scientists say it

no, no, it's going out to sea. but the forecast by the hurricane center still says by that monday, when it looks like it's turning out to the atlantic, it will make a hook and come back toward the coastline and come back and be a problem storm, from virginia up toward boston. you look at the zone and you typically see that center line, oh, that's a category 1 almost strength moving into the delaware area, you can't relax like that yet. we're too many days away from when this storm maybe monday night into tuesday or during the day on tuesday, will find that landfall. anywhere from virginia up to boston, has to watch this storm every weekend, or every day throughout the weekend. here comes the cold blast of air. and this is part of the player here that's going to get involved in this system. look at what it does in the rest of the country. it's not just a coastal system. by the time this thing drops that cold air into chicago on sunday. 48 degrees. washington, d.c., down into the 60s. new orleans will go into the 50s on saturday. that's how powerful that shot of cold air is. quick look at the big boards. we'll talk about lots of other places for your weekend trip, or whatever you're doing.

>> i didn't see eye contact on the sigg side. >> reporter: cameras and sketch artists were not allowed in court. but abc producer phillip mavavea was behind jessica's family. >> they didn't have emotion towards the sigg group. >> reporter: prosecutors will charge sigg as an adult. during the hearing, they dropped two bombshells. telling a judge, sigg confessed to ridgeway's murder, as well as an attempted abduction in may. and they had dna evidence tying him to the backpack and the crime scenes. >> defense attorney will point to procedural error and will try to undercut the reliability of the dna evidence. >> reporter: sigg's first court appearance came as investigators worked a second day at his westminster, colorado home. sources tell abc news, human remains believed to be jessica's were found inside. >> austin functions at a different reality, perhaps, than the rest of us. >> reporter: investigators are

sigg has confessed to the abduction of the 22-year-old and the killing of a 10-year-old. is it unusual for a killer to have two seemingly different victims? >> no. this play represent a progression of attempts that this person was going through. when we first heard about the reggie wan murder, we think about a pedophile case. with the attempted abduction, what it looks like more is he was testing the waters. testing what it feels like to abduct someone. certainly, he was interested in mortuary sciences. this may be something he was testing out to see what it would be like to engage in this, as horrific as it is. >> and he had a fascination with forensicses and apparently wanted to become a mortician. >> absolutely. what we see with some people who engage in these types of

incomprehensible crimes is that they may be drawn to this by reading about these types of murders and autopsies. and investigations. and may, in some way, find it thrilling. and that kind of reinforces it. and they try to go a little bit further and a little bit further. >> at the same time, he seems to have been keeping up a normal life. >> and that's not unusual. we've seen this in some of the most storied murders of our time. people who live almost a double-life, where they have a normal family life. and then, they engage in horrific things. periodically, every so often. it's not a need to do all the time. but they do it. they get whatever release, a reward for it. and then, they go back to their normal life. >> okay, doctor. thanks very much. time for the weather and sam. >> good morning, george. one of our headlines is the big shot of cold air through the middle of the country. yesterday, denver got about five inches of show.

now, to brand-new details in the britney spears trial. her former manager taking tough questions in court on thursday, about whether he was fit to manage the superstar's career, at a time when spears' life seemed to be spinning out of control. ♪ i make it hot when i get on the show ♪ >> reporter: pop superstar, britney spears' trial may be reaching circus levitts. her former something, sam lufti, was bombarded about questions about his qualifications. and claimed he never made more than $10,000 in the ten years he worked in the industry. lufti said he was born and raised in l.a., read the trade publications and had lots of friends in the industry. under intense questioning from sam boxer, he was unable to define common terms used in the entertainment business, such as lines of congress and copyright.

he said he worked and didn't always get paid. lufti is suing spears' parents over breach of contract. he was fired as her manager at a time when britney's life and career seemed in turmoil. her father, jamie spears, was named her conservator in 2008. tmz tracked down a nanny who worked for britney at this time. >> he's not a manager. nothing. he has no capability to do any of that stuff. he's a low-life loser. seems like a wannabe in every sense possible. >> reporter: she denied lufti's claim that britney was using drugs, including crystal meth. >> i was there 24/7. worked around the clock. and i had never seen meth in that house or any type of drugs. >> reporter: the pop superstar has not attended the los angeles trial. instead, focusing on her life with her two boys and her continued comeback as judge on "the x factor." just last night tweeting that she'll appear on "the tonight show," with jay leno on monday.

crawling champ. the stakes could not be higher. it's on, people. look at little tate first. they are low-riding speedsters, all in a race to be number one. it's babies and their parents, competing for the coveted title of diaper derby champion. they're not potty-trained. but they have been training for the race of their young lives. nothing can rattle them. meet the challengers for "gma's" ultimate diaper derby. jack likes to play with hair and is a competitive army crawler. lanie spends her free time with her dog, bernie. and when she's not practicing her crawl, she's singing. sammy loves to mug for the camera and loves the ladies. and nevin is a stellar clapper and hand shaker. a politician in the making. finally, sabrina. she likes to fuel up on bananas. they give her the edge in the

[ cheers and applause ] welcome back, everybody. what a crowd on this friday. and guess what. thanks giving is right around the corner. here to share some seasonal comfort food recipes with us, is chef fabio viviani. welcome. thanks for being with us. >> thanks for having me. we have during -- fall is on the door. the weather's getting a little cloudy. we can be warm and orange. >> we're going to get to the cooking just a sec. we have something for lara, actually. we want to put another "gma's" own lara spencer and josh

elliott were both on your show. let's look at the clip. >> what are we looking at? >> "gma," i have two very good friend there's. one is josh, one of the hosts. i love him. and lara spencer. >> why don't you separate us? >> really? >> i love this. we always, always have a blast. >> lots of love to go around. one more hug. >> we're cooking carrot ginger soup here? >> we got a little boil in there. the base is shallots and ginger root. a lot of people are worried that ginger root is too fibery. if you let them cook down and blend them, they will be nice and soft. they will cook through. >> rice? >> it's about ready. the good news, if it's orange,

people will not meet the pumpkin when they're not having it. >> shallots, carrots, ginger and cream. flour and butter to bring it together. if you want to make it vegetarian, you can use olive oil instead of butter. and instead of using chicken stock, use vegetable stock. about an hour, maybe 45 minutes. >> and your whole kitchen will smell amazing. >> yeah. then, we're going to blend it with a hand-held. the oil, the ginger, the carrot, will make everything nice and smooth. once you have the whole thing blended what you want to do is a little bit of seasoning. this case, you can season it with pumpkins. let me get a towel for you. >> what a gentleman. what a gentleman.

>> at the end of the day, you season with whatever you like. pumpkin spice, a little salt and pepper, little cloves. everything works well. >> what do you top it with right here? >> fresh parsley. correct. you can add a little chive. add whatever you like. and also, a fantastic dish. the soup for our pork roast. >> is that pork and apple sauce? >> well -- >> apple sauce is not quite italian. we have cooked apple with brown sugar and lemon juice. the pork has seasoning around fennel, rosemary. nice holiday. let me serve you some, please. there is no green. it's very, very light. >> can you give us one good tip when you're cooking a pork roast of that size? >> leave it alone. here's a deal. many people go back. they have -- they check on it. you have to leave it alone.

a good roast has to sit in the oven, low and slow. >> low and slow. i like that. >> salad down there, too. >> we got an arugula salad, grilled figs. fig is a kind of fruit, that when you grill it, brings out so much goodness. we have walnuts and arugula. >> thank you. we want to tell you, all of the recipes are online. they're all fabulous. check it out. goodmorningamerica.com on yahoo! fabio, thanks so much. >> this is so good.
